It is very important that you dedicate time to researching these critters before you jump in. It is best for you and the gliders that you make a well informed decision about glider ownership. Here at Ogre's Fuzzlebutts, I will not adopt a joey to someone who will not talk with me about their care and show that they know what they're in for. These are exotic pets and require special care, and you should know how to give that care before you get one. Whether you plan to purchase a joey from me or not, do yourself and the gliders a favor by looking into it further.
If you prefer to research through pages on a website, Suggie.info is a wonderful resource. It is much more in depth than this one on all topics. I especially think you should look at everything under the "Beginnings" tab, and this page about Myths and Misconceptions.
One of the most valuable sources for researching sugar gliders while you are new, or if you can't stand drama, in my opinion, is GliderCentral. This is an online forum of sugar glider owners that are willing to help you with all of your questions. Just log in and ask! Many people will tell you their own experiences on your topic. More importantly it is a smaller, newbie question friendly community.
There are Facebook groups for sugar gliders that can also be a great resource. Keyword there is CAN. Some of them, in my opinion, sugar coat facts and leave out important facts to try to keep everyone happy. This is bad because a new person looking for info will think something is safe that is not, simply because you are not allowed to "bash" a particular thing on that page. A real world example is that you are not allowed to, on a particular page, to tell the newbie that the Wodent Wheel they purchased is unsafe, even though countless suggies have had their tails amputated because the product can and has stripped the skin right off of gliders tails. People who don't want to be told they made a bad choice often go make their own page. If you are going to join a suggie FB group to ask questions or just lurk and read other peoples posts, I'd recommend starting with the Sugar Gliders page. Be aware that one of the main ideas of this group is that they DO NOT sugar coat facts. It is a place to get real responses when you have a question. This leads to a few feelings getting hurt from time to time. It is better to be corrected than to be given a pat on the back for a picture of your glider in an unsafe situation. Facebook is a great place to interact with the glider community and meet other glider lovers. Just remember that anyone can make and run a page, so don't just take everything as fact. Research aside... Facebook is the ultimate place to share cute suggie pics.
